Planted on clays, limestone and flint, 19 hectares (46 acres) are planted with white grape varieties, Sémillon (51%), Sauvignon Blanc (26%), Sauvignon Gris (12%) and Muscadelle (11%).
On very shallow soil over limestone sub soil 26 hectares (64 acres) are planted in red varieties, Merlot (55%), Cabernet Sauvignon (21%), Cabernet Franc (14%) and Malbec (10%).
In 1998, a soil study was carried out, which allowed David Fourtout to work in perfect harmony with the estates terroirs.
We have observed that there’s no one right way to look after the vineyards. Actually, on the Verdots estate, we adapt the cultural methods (grassing up, topping and trimming) to suit the exact environment and the weather as it varies from year to year.
We treat the estate using “lute raisonnée” – “intelligent fighting”
“Lutte raisonnée “is opposed to the traditional use of massive chemical sprays. It is a treatment, adapted to each situation, which attempts to minimize the use of chemicals to the absolute minimum necessary.
It can be defined as winegrowing which respects the environment, and is economically viable for the producer. Its methods seek to maintain the biodiversity of the winegrowing ecosystem and its surroundings.
As the harvest approaches, Davis Fourtout, accompanied by his oenologues, tastes the grapes. This procedure allows him to harvest the grapes at the optimum stage of maturity to permit the extraction of the colours and aromas that best represent the terroirs of the estate.
If you are looking for high class wine, you can discover the aromas of the specialities coming from the Bergerac and Monbazillac regions at the Verdots Estate: AOC Bergerac and Monbazillac wines, rosé, white, red, etc.
